One cannot always go on holidays to the other side of the globe. Even if attrative as an idea it is also, I do believe, quite misleading. Indeed, one fails to see the beam in one’s eye but can very well think that it is more beautiful in a country in “-stan”.
The french countryside is very nice, showing a broad variety of barns, farms, fields, animals (and crap of course). I had the possibility to take a couple of shots in traditional farms, and also to go close to the animals, while experiencing the hospitality of these wonderful warm people. How comes they did not decide to hang me on the highest branch of the nearest tree because of my comments is beyond me…
The animals were also quite friendly, in a different way. They are all good models if not a bit unstable. Your typical sheep will run like mad at the first noise while your typical goat will come and investigate if your shoelace or your shirt sleeve are as tasty as they look. The cows are great (and huge!) and do not give a damn about you, until they lick your lens if you come a wee bit closer. Good times…

This exhibition (or rather a different selection of pictures based on that set) was shown in Koenji, a suburb’ of Tokyo (West of Shinjuku) from the 7th to the 14th of January 2008. One can still see the flyer on flickr here. It was also shown on-line on the BOP website for some time, now it is archived here. A selection of this set was also shown on a previous incarnation of the Azimut Brutal.org
Special thanks to Hélène and the Deschamps family (that includes relatives) for letting me being a dork and play with food… I mean… animals.
very good “vintage” work; I start to look at this like an exotic world, in fact, we don’t talk enough about the french farming… this whole world will disappear in the next 30 years. The memories of the farmer who was living in front of my home when I was a kid, (myself, the son of a farmer) are vanishing… I wish I could have taken photographs of this period, now, old farms are renovated in neat summer vacations houses…
